What a calendar is for

Unix time and the Balinese Pawukon are both on this site and they have almost nothing in common. One counts, the other cycles — and the difference explains what a calendar is actually built to do.

The short answer

Calendars do one of two jobs, and mostly they do both badly on purpose. A count tells you how far you are from a fixed point and never repeats — Unix time, the Julian Day Number, the Maya Long Count. A cycle tells you where you are within a repeating pattern and never says which repetition — the Balinese Pawukon, the Akan day-names, a zodiac. Most calendars people live by are a count of cycles: a year number, plus a position inside the year.

Two different questions

"What day is it?" is really two questions, and different systems answer only one of them.

A count is unambiguous and useless for planning: no number of seconds tells you whether to plant. A cycle is immediately useful and cannot distinguish this Wednesday from any other. A conventional calendar staples them together.

Calendars that only cycle

Several living systems answer only the second question, and are complete without a year number at all.

  • The Balinese Pawukon runs ten concurrent weeks of different lengths, from one day to ten, all turning at once. The whole configuration repeats every 210 days. Nothing counts the repetitions.
  • Akan day-names place you in a seven-day cycle interlocking with a six-day one, giving a 42-day round — and a person’s name records the day they were born into it.
  • The Maya Calendar Round interlocks a 260-day sacred count with a 365-day year; the pair realigns every 52 years. The Maya kept a Long Count alongside it precisely because the Round cannot tell one 52-year era from the next.

Why they can all sit on one page

Everything here reads the same instant. A second is a second in all of them, so nothing is rescaled to make the columns line up — which is why systems with a different day or year length visibly drift against each other as you watch.

That is the honest result, and it is the point. Put a count, a cycle, and a dated calendar side by side and the differences stop being trivia: they are three answers to a question that turns out not to have had one meaning.

Common questions

What is the difference between a calendar and a clock?
Scale, mostly. A clock divides the day; a calendar divides longer spans. Some systems here do both — Mars Coordinated Time is a clock, Swatch Internet Time divides the day into 1,000 beats.
Is Unix time a calendar?
It is a continuous count, not a calendar — it has no months, no weeks and no year. That is exactly why it is useful to computers and useless for deciding when to plant.
Why do some calendars have no year number?
Because they are cycles rather than counts. The Balinese Pawukon and the Akan day-names tell you your position in a repeating pattern, which is the question their communities put to them.
