Years After Aegon's Conquest (anchored)

Years are counted After Aegon’s Conquest (AC), but the seasons are the famous mystery — running for years at unguessable length, which is why no offset could ever align them with ours. Westeros is a world apart, not our past or future, so nothing in the text dates it against Earth. This count borrows the convention used for Star Wars: 1996, when A Game of Thrones was published, is taken as 298 AC, the year the story opens, and time runs on from there.
